how deep do you plant weed seeds

You might also find a mature seed that has been physically damaged through poor handling, like rough trimming. In those cases, it probably isn’t worth the effort to try and germinate the seed.

Take four sheets of paper towels and soak them with distilled water. The towels should be soaked but shouldn’t have excess water running off.

As interest in CBD as a medicine has grown, many breeders have crossed high-CBD hemp with cannabis. These strains have little or no THC, 1:1 ratios of THC and CBD, or some have a high-THC content along with significant amounts of CBD (3% or more).

Is the seed viable?

Cannabis used for hemp production has been selected for other traits, including a low THC content, so as to comply with the 2018 Farm Bill. Consequently, many varieties of hemp produce significant quantities of CBD.

Within a week or so you should see a seedling begin to grow from the soil.

Growing marijuana takes a certain level of commitment: time, energy, and financial resources, so be sure you can commit to the whole process.

For a seed to be viable, it must be mature enough to have a completely formed genetic blueprint, and it must be strong enough to germinate and pop through its hard casing and sprout its crucial taproot.

Finish things off by spraying the surface with a plant sprayer to make the soil moist. Seeds need to remain moist, so you should frequently check the dirt to make sure it has enough water for healthy plant growth.

The best choice of soil for marijuana seeds is a light mix. The light mix does not have a high concentration of nutrients, which can be detrimental to a seedling’s health. Young plants do not need as many nutrients as mature ones.

The dimple should be about a couple of centimeters deep. If you are using a pencil, an easy way to measure is by making the tiny hole erasure-deep. Like any plant, you do not want to plant the weed seed too far in the growing medium.

FAQ About Planting Weed Seeds

Some seeds may be tricky to plant and grow, but you do not need much regarding cannabis seeds. You will notice that many of the tools are already in your home. If you need to get any additional items, you can find them in a regular store or garden center. The list of equipment includes:

Some growers use the damp paper towel method for the germination process. Sometimes, the newly-formed root of the seed can get stuck to the paper towel. The first instinct is to pull it loose carefully, but the action could potentially damage the plant. Instead, spray it with some water to encourage the root to let go of the paper towel.

Burying a weed seed too far into the soil can negatively impact its growth. The recommended depth of the hole is 2 to 2.5 centimeters. It is the best length because seedlings have roots that are 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters long. A couple of centimeters ensures they have enough space.

Growers usually germinate cannabis seeds before they plant them. The germination stage is relatively short, and it takes an average of two to three days. Some weed seeds take longer than others due to multiple factors. The technique you used to germinate can influence how long it takes to germinate. For example, the recommended water method lasts roughly 18 to 36 hours for most seeds.

Your growing pots will need to be placed in a damp climate that is within the temperature range listed under our golden rules. After 4–10 days, you should see a young seedling sprout, while the roots will have begun to develop underneath the soil. The entire plant and its soil can now be transferred to a larger pot, where normal growing routines should start.

Arguably one of the least effective methods, but it is still viable. Incredibly simple to facilitate, beginner growers may opt to germinate their seeds in a glass of water. Half-fill a glass or bowl with water that is approximately 22°C (71°F).

You will need to invest in a few pieces of unique equipment, but by using stone wool blocks, you can create a perfect utopia for germinating cannabis seeds. Soak the stone wool blocks in the same way you would a soil medium. The wool will retain the moisture and prevent the need to water during the early stages of germination. After the wool blocks are soaked, stick them in a plastic tray that also has a lid. Large cake tubs are ideal.

WET KITCHEN TOWEL METHOD

Two or three weeks after germination, your young seedlings should be ready for their new home. At this point you have two options; transplanting them into soil pots, or taking on the challenge of hydroponics. You’ll know when the seedlings are ready to be moved because the root system should start to poke out of the bottom of the wool blocks. As long as the roots haven’t begun to engulf the bottom half of the wool block, they will seek out water and nutrients in their new surroundings and continue to grow downwards.

Place one sheet of damp kitchen towel on a flat surface. Space your seeds a few centimetres apart before placing the second piece of kitchen towel over the top. You need to ensure both pieces are damp, not wet. Once again, when the white root tips reach 2–3mm, move the seeds (carefully) to soil pots. Use the same guidance found above for planting techniques.

If you don’t like the idea of pre-soaking your soil, you can use a spray to moisten the holes before you plant each seed. With enough moisture surrounding your seeds, you can still encourage a root to develop.

Before you can be met with bountiful hauls of dank buds, there are several stages of cannabis growing that take precedence. Unless you can successfully germinate cannabis seeds, you won’t have a plant to harvest. Give your seeds the best possible start in life by reading our definitive guide to germination.

Not all herbicides will kill all type of weeds. For example, selective herbicides made to kill broadleaf weeds will not kill the dreaded crabgrass — because it’s a grass.

Whichever product you select, it’s vital to apply it thoroughly and evenly to gain the best weed prevention. You will need to know how many square feet in your yard to mix the right amount. A pre-emergent must cover your target area completely to serve as a barrier against weed growth. Missing a spot could mean trouble because if you give a weed an inch — it’ll take a yard!

Is It a Selective or Nonselective Product?

Prodiamine – The active ingredient found in the popular Barricade brand pre-emergence herbicide, which tackles about 30 different broadleaf and grassy weeds, including the dreaded crabgrass and annual bluegrass (poa annua).

Exactly when your soil turns that temperature will depend on your local climate, and what the weather is like this season. Mid-winter? Early spring? Late spring? Maybe, maybe and maybe.

This is a matter of personal preference. Liquid pre-emergent products must be applied with a properly calibrated sprayer. It’s essential to water in granular products applied by a spreader.

Important: Pre-emergent is not designed to control existing weeds or weed seeds.

If you’re working with a non-irrigated area or a drip zone, apply the pre-emergent just before rain is anticipated.

Developing a Weed Control Strategy

Principle #2: Pre-emergent must be mixed correctly and applied evenly over the target area for best results.

What are the life cycles of the weeds, and when is the proper timing for a pre-emergent herbicide application?

Principle #3: Pre-emergent herbicide must be watered in.

growing auto seeds

If you’re ready for a more serious approach, make sure you have the space for a proper garden and pop the seeds to see what fruit they bear.

Marijuana seeds can be acquired from an array of sources and can vary in quality. For more info on how to buy marijuana seeds, check out our Guide to buying cannabis seeds.

Cannabis plant sex organs appear on nodes, the points where branches grow off from the main stalk.

Time to germinate

After completing these steps, it’s time to wait. Check the paper towels once a day to make sure they’re still saturated, and if they are losing moisture, apply more water to keep the seeds happy.

Through cloning, you can create a new harvest with exact replicas of your favorite plant. Because genetics are identical, a clone will give you a plant with the same characteristics as the mother, such as flavor, cannabinoid profile, yield, grow time, etc. So if you come across a specific strain or phenotype you really like, you might want to clone it to reproduce more buds that have the same effects and characteristics.

These are referred to as “bagseeds” and whether or not you can grow one will depend on where it came from.

The main drawback to growing from seed is there is no guarantee as to what you’ll end up with—if you buy a regular pack of cannabis seeds, it will be a mix of males and females. You’ll need to sex them out (more below) to identify the males and get rid of them, because you don’t want your females producing seeds.

How do you water cannabis properly? For starters, don’t water your plants on a fixed schedule, but instead only when they need it. You should always allow the soil to dry out between waterings. A good way to check if your plants need water is to lift up the pots. You should have a pretty good idea of how light a dry pot is compared to one saturated with water. As such, only water when the pot is light and the soil has dried out. Overwatering can be deadly, so it’s better to err on the side of caution.

Make sure to provide your autoflowering ladies with good airflow. A gentle breeze of fresh air from a ventilator ensures humidity levels in your grow room stay low, which helps prevent the growth of mould. If your plants have dried leaves, which is not uncommon in the later stage of flowering, remove them for some better airflow around the buds.

To carry out a SOG with autoflowers, you’d simply plant your seeds directly into even smaller containers that allow you to fit as many plants as possible into every square metre of space. How many plants you want to use for your SOG, as well as their exact pot size, will depend on the space you have available. This may also vary from strain to strain. Feel free to experiment to find the ideal pot size and number of plants that produces the best yields in your indoor grow space.

TIP 9: CUT THE NUTRIENTS

More than anything else, genetics will play the biggest role in determining the final outcome of your grow operation. But what makes the right strain? Well, let’s start with your personal preferences, for example, what type of effect you want from your cannabis. If you’re smoking to get blazed with the best and the latest, you can’t go wrong with THC monsters like the super dank and potent Royal Cookies Automatic or Royal Gorilla Automatic, our automatic variants of two popular strains!

Autoflowers are a class of cannabis that has only thrived on the commercial market in the last few years. Today, they are taking the market by storm with their ease of growth and great results. With these tips for growing autoflowers indoors, you can make the most of your autoflowering grow-op!

Don’t top, prune, or pinch your autoflowers like you might do when growing conventional cannabis. With autoflowers, the only training method you should use is low-stress training (LST), where you carefully bend and tie down your plants so all bud sites are equally exposed to light. When performing LST on autoflowers, just stick with bending and skip the part where you’d top your plants. If you plan to do LST with your autoflowers as an alternative to a SOG, ensure that you start soon, but be gentle to avoid breaking your plants.

There is no need to add nutrients during this period. By week three, you can begin adding nutrients and increase the feeding rate weekly. Remember, the vegetative stage is short, so you need less nitrogen. Light feeding is ideal unless you notice a nutrient deficiency. You’ll need to alter the nutrients once the plant hits the flowering stage.

When Quick One was released, it was among the fastest-growing strains ever. While there are even quicker growing autos these days, Quick One is still lightning with a total grow time of around 8-9 weeks. However, you may want to give it an extra week for a more mature final plant.

Where to Find Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds

The shorter growing season means you have a higher level of autoflowering varieties. Imagine having the opportunity to grow five different strains in a single season! Multiple harvests are especially useful if you enjoy the growing process and are keen to sample as many marijuana types as possible.

It is also crucial to purchase feminized seeds. Otherwise, around half of your crop will consist of male plants, which could ruin everything. If you have a small grow room, purchase an indica strain because they usually grow smaller. If you have a larger space, buy sativa autoflower strains. They are typically bigger and provide a higher yield.

Do you desperately want a cannabis garden but don’t have the time to dedicate? If so, autoflowering seeds are potentially the answer to your prayers! These unique strains flower automatically rather than waiting for a specific lighting cycle. Generally speaking, your plants will begin flowering after a vegetative stage of just 2-4 weeks.

mustard seed weed killer

If you are not opposed to herbicide applications for weeds that have germinated, you want to try and time these applications when the plant is young (the younger the better) and actively growing. Applications with products with active ingredients like 2, 4-D, dicamba, triclopyr, and glyphosate have been reported to control mustard weeds. If organic options like acids or oils are preferred, make sure that the product that you use is labeled as a herbicide, such as enhanced vinegars. Home-use distilled vinegar is not labeled for use as an herbicide. Since these products only burn and damage the surface of the plant, it is also essential to try and make this application when the plant is young and most susceptible.

If you have mature mustard plants and it is late in the season (such as now) the plant may be too mature to respond completely to an herbicide application, synthetic or organic. In the southern portion of the state (Las Cruces, Deming, Hobbs, et.) temperatures have been so mild this winter that mustard plants are already beginning to produce seed heads with viable seed…at this point the most effective method of control is to cut the roots, rake, or hand-pull and remove the plants prior to dropping their seed. In some of the more northern cities (Albuquerque, Santa Fe, etc.) temperatures may still be cold enough to delay the production of seed heads in mustard plants. If this is the case, as the temperatures start to get a little warmer you can apply a postemergence herbicide, such as glyphosate, as the plant is actively growing and developing a seedhead.

A.) Dr. Leslie Beck, NMSU Extension Weed Specialist, provided the following excellent information in answer to your question. This should also be helpful to other New Mexico gardeners.

Q.) I have mustard weeds all over the place defying temperatures in the teens. What can I do?

Mustard weeds have annual lifecycles, although they can germinate and grow as both winter and summer annuals depending on temperatures. Additionally, mustards like flixweed and shepherd’s purse have the ability to survive as weak biennials depending on temperatures and moisture availability. Plants with annual and biennial lifecycles must germinate from seed during each growth season. Thus, the key to controlling these plants is to target them when they are newly germinated before they have the ability to produce copious amounts of viable seed and disperse them into the soil to germinate later (in some cases decades later). Mulching (2-4 inches thick) or laying plastic over areas of bare soil will help to block sunlight and prevent germination of mustard seeds. I often get questions asking if allowing plastic covering to be exposed to the sunlight will heat the soil surface to a temperature that will kill dormant weed seeds. While this practice, known as solarization, may help some (which is better than none), generally the soil will not get hot enough at enough of a depth to really make a dent in the seed population. Using a weed burner or a propane flame torch may be effective on germinating plants, but again the soil acts as a great buffer against heat and will not damage seeds unless they are right on the surface. In addition, great caution should always be taken with using flame to control weeds. If you are not opposed to herbicides, a preemergence barrier with the active ingredient pendimethalin will also help to control the weed as they germinate.

Mustard weeds are very prolific and competitive weeds which invade multiple cropping systems, from lawn and landscape to agronomic crops, throughout the southwestern US. In New Mexico, these weeds are primarily comprised of London rocket (Sisymbrium irio), flixweed or tansy mustard (Descurainia Sophia), or shepherd’s purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris). Mustards, like most plants designated as weeds, have the ability to germinate quickly and mature earlier in the year than our desirable/native plants, which gives them a definite competitive edge. Additionally, London rocket is notorious for overwintering the curly top virus, which can then be transferred to nearby garden crops (i.e. tomatoes, chile) in the spring. This occurs as the beet leafhopper feeds on the mustard plant, carries the virus in its mouthparts which are then used to feed on the garden crops, thus effectively spreading the disease.

Sheron C., Albuquerque

Herbicides can also be effective in controlling wild mustard. There are several different types of herbicides that will work against wild mustard, but there are some that the weeds have grown resistant to and that will no longer work.

Unfortunately, there are no other cultural or biological control methods for wild mustard. Burning does not help, nor does allowing animals to forage. The seeds of wild mustard can actually be toxic to livestock.

Because it’s so tough, getting rid of wild mustard can be a real project. If you do not want to use chemicals in your garden, the only way to eliminate this weed is to pull it out. The best time to pull mustard weeds is when they are young. This is because they will be easier to pull out, roots and all, but also because removing them before they produce seeds will help limit future growth.

Controlling Wild Mustard Plants

Wild mustard control can be a challenge because this is a tough weed that tends to grow and create dense patches that out-compete other plants. Wild mustard is a pain, but it is a bigger problem for farmers than for home gardeners. You can use both physical and chemical strategies to manage or eliminate wild mustard in your yard or garden.

If you have too many to pull, you can mow down wild mustard before seed production, during the bud to bloom stages. This will limit seed production.

Wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis) is an aggressive weed native to Europe and Asia, but one which was brought to North America and has now taken root. It is an annual that grows to about three to five feet (1 to 1.5 meters) and produces yellow flowers. You will often see these plants growing densely by the roadside and in abandoned areas. They are mostly problematic in cultivated fields, but wild mustard plants can take over your garden too.

There are different varieties of wild mustard, so first determine which type you have and then ask your local nursery or university agricultural department to help you select the right chemical.

Charlie Gray is a fan of growing mustard — the plant, not the hotdog spread — as a soil bio-fumigant. This Newbury, Vt., farmer knows that to make it work, you need to persevere.

He also learned that mustard must be incorporated within 20 minutes of mowing, or 80% of the gas is lost. “We had a lot of bees, so we’d chop it early in the morning before bees got active. Then we’d wait a few hours to till it in. We were waiting too long.”

It takes time to learn how to use it effectively, he says. “Some people, in the first year, don’t do some of the things they should, then don’t see the benefit, so they don’t do it anymore.”

“I’d love to learn more about what’s going on in the soil. We’ve been planting strawberries on this farm for 35 years. We try to rotate. But when you have five acres of beautiful sandy, south-facing land, you don’t want to seed it down for 10 years.

Gray uses no fumigation herbicides, but does use pre- and post-emergence herbicides to help fill in the gaps where they don’t use mustard. “We’ve noticed that we don’t have to use as strong pre-emergence herbicides after mustard fumigation,” he says.

when autoflower start to flower

For those who are new to growing autoflowering Cannabis plants, you may be unaware of exactly how these plants flower. As you may know, autoflowers start flowering automatically, without the need of changing the light cycle. Despite the minor differences between photos and autos, both will show the same signs when flowering such as white hairs, trichomes, and dense calyxes.

When the calyxes have become plump and are visibly dense, it means your plant is almost ready to be harvested, it just needs a bit longer to ripen and you’ll be all set.

1. The Vegetative Stage of Your Cannabis Plant

When your plants have completely matured and the stigmas have turned brown, your plant won’t take more than just a couple of days to be completely mature, at this stage you’re just waiting on the state of the trichomes to harvest your buds at the right time.

As you can see in the image below, even though the plant still needs a couple of days, the calyxes are super fat and round, meaning this plant won’t fatten a lot more but isn’t completely mature yet.

As you may know by now, after 3-5 weeks your autoflower should be transitioning to the flowering stage but if the weeks go by and you don’t see any signs of stigmas (white hairs) there are a couple of things that could be causing this.

Autoflowering strains provide fantastic results in little time, often surging from seed to harvest in as little as 8 weeks. Both beginner and advanced growers will have a fun and easy time raising these varieties.

Follow the fail-safe week-by-week grow guide below for a quick and easy route to harvest time. We cover all of the parameters and variables you need to consider—at the correct times—to ensure your plants remain healthy, vigorous, and productive.

HOW LONG DO AUTOFLOWERS TAKE FROM SEED TO HARVEST?

You can make your own potting mix using the following formula:

The pH value of your soil will determine how well your plants can access the nutrients within. If the pH becomes too high (alkaline) or too low (acidic), nutrient lockout will occur and deficiencies will set in. Cannabis plants thrive in a soil pH of between 6.0 and 6.5. Use a pH tester to track pH throughout your grow.

Many growers elect to cultivate autoflowers because of their speedy growing rate. Their hardy genetics and forgiving nature also make them easier to grow and therefore more beginner-friendly.

The auto-flowering White Widow plant pictured to the right is sick and stunted. Because of the auto-flowering nature of this strain, the grower was unable to nurture the plant back to health before the flowering stage began. In this picture, the plant is 2.5 months old (started from seed like all autoflowering plants), and the buds are nearing their harvest window even though they’re still small and airy. As a result, the total yields from this plant will be very low (just a few grams). This can be discouraging as the grower must start over with a new seed in order to try for a bigger harvest.

There are also some plant training methods that are effective for giving you more control over the final size and shape of your auto-flowering plants.

This technique can be used on auto plants that are getting too tall for your setup, or for any stem that is growing taller than all the others. Most indoor growers want to keep a flat, even canopy when growing indoors to get the most from their grow lights.

So, You Want to Grow an Auto-Flowering Plant!

These two auto-flowering plants are also the same age and and grown in the same environment! The small plant is Auto Chemdawg & the huge plant is Super Lemon Haze Auto.

how do you germinate weed seeds

The best germination method depends on the cultivator’s choice. Here are some of the most common ways to pop your cannabis seeds.

Germination itself is a crucial aspect of cannabis cultivation. The seed germination process is the foundation of every marijuana plant, and steps can be taken to boost successful popping. For example, some cultivators improve germination attempts by soaking seeds in 1% hydrogen peroxide or a compost tea for 12 hours beforehand to kill any dangerous pests.

How to germinate cannabis seeds

The seeds should start sprouting in about two days, though older seeds can take up to a week to sprout. You can remove them from the water and place them in the soil at any point once they’ve sprouted. Once the roots are about five millimeters long, they need to be planted.

Use a spray bottle to moisten the paper towels and then store the cushioned seeds between two plates, under a face-down bowl, or gently place them in a plastic bag. Maintain a temperature of about 72 degrees Fahrenheit, keeping the paper towel wrapped seeds in the dark and away from a windowsill. In two to five days, the seeds will pop inside the paper towel sandwich and emit tiny roots, ready to plant when they reach about five millimeters in length.

When the seedling stems reach two to four inches in height, it’s time to transplant your cannabis into larger pots with more room for roots to spread down and out. After you’ve done this, you’ve successfully germinated your cannabis seeds into proper, young plants.

Cannabis can be either male or female—also called “dioecious”—but only females produce the buds we all know and love. For reproduction, males have pollen sacs and pollinate females, causing female flowers to produce seeds.

Some varieties of cannabis can produce male parts alongside female flowers on the same plant, especially if exposed to environmental stressors. These plants are known as hermaphrodites, and sometimes they can self-pollinate to create seeds.

Pros and cons of using cannabis seeds

In some cases, even if a seed isn’t completely mature, there’s still a chance it could be viable. But often these are extremely weak, take long to develop, and express other unfavorable characteristics. Growers usually discard weak plants to free up space.

The main drawback to growing from seed is there is no guarantee as to what you’ll end up with—if you buy a regular pack of cannabis seeds, it will be a mix of males and females. You’ll need to sex them out (more below) to identify the males and get rid of them, because you don’t want your females producing seeds.

Take two of the paper towels and place them on a plate. Then, place the marijuana seeds at least an inch apart from each other and cover them with the remaining two water-soaked paper towels.

Maintaining the ideal temperature (between 22–25°C/71–77°F) and moisture for germination is tricky. Leaving seeds out in the open environment or on a windowsill is far from ideal; a DIY climate-controlled cupboard would do a much better service. A warming mat is perfect for maintaining a constant temperature, but it doesn’t tackle the issue of moisture.

WET KITCHEN TOWEL METHOD

If you don’t like the idea of pre-soaking your soil, you can use a spray to moisten the holes before you plant each seed. With enough moisture surrounding your seeds, you can still encourage a root to develop.

Before we jump straight into the germination methods, there are a couple of germination golden rules. For the best results, we recommend staying within these guidelines, no matter how you choose to germinate. That being said, of all the factors to consider, temperature is one of the most critical. Seeds will always seek out even the smallest amount of moisture, but they use temperature as a sign that they need to do so.

After 3–5 days, the seeds will start to open, and you should see tiny white tips appear. Once these roots reach 2–3mm in length, use extreme care to transfer them from the water to pre-prepared soil pots.

There is, of course, a far simpler way to germinate seeds. Ideal for beginners, the feminized starter kit by Royal Queen Seeds has everything you need to kick-start your next cannabis project.

If you are overseeding a lawn you will require the following amount of grass seed:

Our Feed, Weed and Moss Killer is the complete fertiliser solution for a tired and weathered lawn that is being held hostage by weeds and moss! This fertiliser acts in three noticeable steps – moss shrinks and dies off and can be easily raked away and weeds quickly disappear by being killed at the root. Existing grass becomes vibrantly and instantly green, revealing areas ready for reseeding. After application, we recommend waiting 2 weeks before planning to seed . This ensures your fertiliser has adequate time to take effect and complete its full process – killing off moss and weeds, and sufficiently feeding your lawn. Patches will appear where moss and weeds have been killed off, these areas will require reseeding. This product should only be used on an established lawn (6 months + old)

Overseeding

You’ll need the below amount of fertiliser to spread on this size of area

• Apply only on an established lawn (6 months + old)
• Apply our fertiliser at the recommended rate by hand when wearing a glove or spreader
• Water the fertiliser in until it dissolves
• Keep kids and pets away from the lawn during application and until the granules dissolve
• Remove / water off any footwear you were wearing during the application of the fertiliser to avoid any risk of damage to newly laid patios / stone flag flooring

Please note this fertiliser can scorch your grass blades, so remember to water it off or apply just before the rain is due. Avoid application during very hot periods. We recommend applying on cooler evenings or overcast days. For more information on all things fertiliser, read our Fertiliser FAQs.

Elliot’s Weed, Feed and Moss Killer is ideal for use in lawns where you want to do four jobs at once; it will make your lawn greener, kill a range of weeds, remove moss & fertilise the grass for a thicker and healthier looking lawn. You can expect to control broadleaved weeds such as dandelion, buttercup, daisy and white clover. The moss will be killed effectively whilst also fertilising the grass at the same time.

Remove the weeds from the area by either manually pulling them out of the ground or applying weed killer to the area. Hand-pulling weeds is safer for the soil, but removing all the roots can be difficult. Chemical weed killer kills the weeds and their roots, but may damage grass seed and leave pesticide residue in the soil, if you plant the seeds too soon after the herbicide application. If you choose to use weed killer, wait 2 to 3 weeks before planting new grass seed.

Trying to grow grass in a weeded area is a frustrating task that generally provides undesirable results. Weeds are aggressive and invasive plants that choke out grass and flowers. They quickly take over an area and are notoriously hard to get rid of. When you choose to grow grass in an area overrun by weeds, you essentially have to start fresh by establishing new turf.

Cover the soil with the correct grass seed for your location and the amount needed to cover the area. For example, some parts of the San Francisco Bay area work best with warm-season grasses — such as St. Augustine, buffalo or zoysia grass — while other Bay areas thrive with cool-season grasses such as tall fescue and perennial rye. Use your gloved hands to distribute the seeds evenly over areas smaller than 150 square feet. For larger areas, use a seed spreader.

Till the top 6 inches of soil with a soil tiller. You can rent or purchase soil tillers at home improvement centers and rental yards. After the tiller turns under the dead weeds and soil, rake the soil with a garden rake to level the area as much as possible. Remove large rocks and break up clumps of soil.

Apply a thin layer – about 1/4 inch – of high-quality topsoil over the grass seed. Applying too thick and the seeds have a hard time germinating. Attach a garden hose sprayer with a mist option to a water hose. Dampen the top 6 inches of the soil with the water hose set on mist. Using a mist of water instead of a stream will prevent the seeds from washing away.

Now, you can apply your soil amendment to ready your soil for the grass seed or sod.

First, you need to choose the right type of seed for your lawn. That will depend on the region you live in—one that needs cool-season grasses, warm-season grasses, or a transition zone that allows more flexibility. After you determine which category you need, you can select specific grasses that may have attributes you’re after, like heat- or drought-resistance.

Proper maintenance is critical if you want your newly established lawn to stay weed-free. Mow at either the highest or second-highest setting. Vigorous grass won’t be choked out by weeds. Fertilize your lawn as needed to help it thrive.

Step 4: Wait It Out

Read our handy guide on how to restore a weedy, patchy lawn to its former glory.

Keep in mind that herbicides can kill whatever plant life they come into contact with—even if the label says otherwise—so handle with care. If your aim is to re-establish your lawn, as we recommend, killing your existing, thinning grass isn’t a big deal, since you will need to start fresh anyway.

Weeds come in multiple categories, either broadleaf, grass-like, or grassy.

Your raking and tilling from the previous step can help with dethatching, but you can also use a dethatching rake if the layer is too excessive.

Babylon you break the very laws that you made,
To ban out Jah garden, is a mistake.
I man is the roots and not the branches,
I see through your lies little son of a.
Lord, bless I wit the abundant herb for meditation,
Grow it and spread it to the whole nation.
Nuff of the youth spread negative vibration,
All wrapped up in downpression.
But in I herbal garden, is a sweet medicine for me,
In I herbal garden, is what inspired this melody.

Sensimilla is a gift from Jah,
I will not follow your man made law.
Me nah ’cause no trouble with Jah herb in me pipe,
Yes me fire up and yes me feel alright.
Me blaze up the green when me feeling the blues,
To plant tribal seeds is what I and I choose.
Never disrespect I will never abuse,
It is laws of the book, I follow the rules.
In I herbal garden is a sweet medicine for me,
In I herbal garden is what inspired this melody.

Can I get some meditation today?
Can I get a good vibration today?
Can I get some meditation today?
Can I get a good vibration today?

Please mister herbs man!
Whoa, mister herbs man!
Yea, collie herbs man!
Herbs man!

Come on and burn,
Put your two lungs to work.
Oh I say burn,
Put your two lungs to work.
For the ganja smoking, for the ganja.
For the ganja smoking, for the marijuana.

The herb was rooted off Solomon’s grave
Him was the wisest king who ever did live
You know say knotty dreads them grown on the top of his head. Head, his head
You know the ignorant them say we impure
Commercials lie about the weed that’s for sure
Media propaganda we nah want it no more, no more

In the higher of places
All them want is war
In the higher of places
All them crave is power
Let it ease your mind
Let the herb ease your mind

Rasta say smoke smoke
I mon say smoke smoke
Sisters say smoke smoke
Idrens say smoke smoke
Light up your ganja marijuana
Light up your ganja marijuana

Rasta say smoke smoke
I mon say smoke smoke
Sisters say smoke smoke
Idrens say smoke smoke
Light up your ganja marijuana
Light up your ganja marijuana

In the early of the morning
In the midday sun
In the stillness of night
When the herb is ripe
Smoke smoke, smoke smoke
Smoke smoke

BFS: Coming from San Diego, home to some of the best reggae in the world, how hard was it to rise to success?

Tribal Seeds finally made their way into Northern Colorado, bringing along Los Angeles based reggae groups The Expanders and Arise Roots, blessing reggae lovers who have a passion of getting irie under the moon. The first two bands to hit the stage were there to bring the roots. Arise Roots started the show with some smooth reggae, but before you knew it they had the whole crowd with their hands in the air. After that, it is safe to say that the night only got groovier as the music went on. The last opener to perform were The Expanders, an oh so perfect warm up to Tribal Seeds. Being sure to give vocal tribute to Colorado’s liberation of marijuana, it felt like a headlining performance in itself with their stellar mellow sounds and lively vocals.

Interview with Tony-Ray Jacobo of Tribal Seeds

Tony-Ray: For Run the Show, we made that song at the time when Dubstep was coming up here in the states. It had been around in Europe for a while, and it was based off of reggae and dub reggae, and they just kind of added those heavy synths on top of it. So I really like the sound and they rhythmic patterns that they were doing for Dubstep when it was coming up, and I just kind of incorporated it into Run the Show, it was something I wanted to try.

BFS: Being a producer and pianist, what is your favorite song to preform?
