The 7 Best CBD-Infused Beers and Beverages of 2022

How will you be celebrating 4/20 this year? Perhaps we can suggest you enjoy 4/20 a little differently by indulging in a CBD-infused beer or beverage in 2022.

But what exactly is CBD? And how can breweries actually add it into beer or other beverages? Plus, what are some amazing versions to try?

Don’t worry, we have the lowdown on these highly regarded CBD-infused drinks.

First, What Is a CBD-Infused Beer or Alcoholic Beverage?

Cannabidiol, aka CBD, is one of the active compounds found in cannabis plants such as hemp or marijuana.

Unlike THC, a psychoactive property found in marijuana, CBD does not actually get you high. Rather, CBD creates mild relaxation and helps with pain relief. For that reason, hemp-derived CBD is federally legal.

In fact, the 2018 Farm Bill actually legalized the production of hemp, so companies can create products with hemp (such as gummies, coffee, etc.) as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC by weight.

Here’s the catch: The DEA still views CBD as a schedule 1 drug, meaning brewing beer or other alcoholic beverages with CBD can be a bit of a challenge. Which is why breweries in the past often needed to cancel their CBD-infused beers.

But that just means that breweries have adapted. Today, many beers made with CBD in the United States have little to no alcohol.

And in this still-emerging space, enterprising businesses have created other high-quality non-alcoholic beverages with CBD, including seltzers, still waters, and even sparkling tea and juice.

So Why Exactly Are CBD-Infused Beverages Popular…Even If Some Have No Alcohol?

Brewing CBD-infused beverages requires a dealcoholization process similar to what homebrewers use, except the alcohol is taken out and the cannabis extract is put in. The flavor is similar to an alcoholic beverage or even a well-crafted non-alcoholic beer. All while still keeping a familiar flavor and fizz.

Bottom line: There are some kickass CBD-infused beverages on the market that taste incredible while providing that nice mellow, relaxing ride.

You just need to know where to look.

Thankfully, we’ve done all the searching for you.

Without further ado, here are our seven best CBD-infused beers and beverages to enjoy on April 20th, 2022.

The 7 Best CBD-Infused Beers and Beverages of 2022

Hi-Fi Sessions – Lagunitas Brewing Company

Cannabis-Infused Hoppy Sparkling Water – “It takes a lot of good weed to make great beer,” says Tony Magee, founder of Lagunitas, on the brewery’s website. In 2017, in order to merge those two loves, in 2017 Lagunitas worked with AbsoluteXtracts, a homegrown California cannabis company. Together they created Hi-Fi Sessions (formerly known as Hi-Fi Hops), a hoppy sparkling beverage with zero calories and zero carbs, infused with top quality THC and CBD from locally grown cannabis.

The team mastered the art of creating zero-alcohol, CBD-infused drinks by using water-soluble THC and CBD in Hi-Fi Sessions. This process lets the THC and CBD enter the bloodstream without needing to be digested. Instead, those properties are absorbed through the mouth and the stomach before making their way through the rest of the body.

With 18 mg of CBD and 1 mg THC, Lagunitas made an IPA-inspired drink that will grant you serenity with each sip.

With three unique flavors to choose from—Cloudberry, Hoppy Chill, and Hoppy Balance—you’ll be sure to find the best tasting, chillest drink for you.

At the time of publication, Hi-Fi Sessions is only available in dispensaries in California and Colorado.

Indiewave West Coast IPA – Ceria Brewing Co.

CBD-Infused Non-Alcoholic Beer – Keith Villa, creator of Blue Moon, also founded Ceria Brewing Co., an alcohol-free brewery. Ceria’s proprietary brewing method to make NA beer sets this brewery apart along with high-quality malts, hops, and spices. Ceria is determined to offer healthier alternatives compared to traditional craft beer.

A dealcoholized cannabis beer, Indiewave IPA is a West Coast-style IPA brewed with light caramel malts and Cascade, Citra, and Amarillo hops. A smooth citrusy IPA, Indiewave contains 10 mg of THC and CBD per 12oz can.

If you like your hops and your CBD this is the beer for you.

CBD Pilsner – Untitled Art

CBD-Infused Pilsner – We haven’t really seen any other CBD-infused pilsners on the market, so we’re really excited by this wacky version from Untitled Art. Super crushable with that nice earthy minerality you often find in pilsners, CBD Pilsner isn’t necessarily dank, but it is tasty and cool.

CBD Pale Ale – Gilgamesh Brewing

CBD-Infused American Pale Ale – Brewed with BRU-1, Mosaic, Idaho 7, and Citra hops, CBD Pale Ale from Gilgamesh Brewing in Salem, OR, has a little extra surprise. Five milligrams of what the brewery calls “highly absorbable nano CBDs” make their way into every 12oz can, meaning this subtle pale ale also gives you a gentle chill. According to the beer’s description on Untappd, “this is the perfect combination to relax both the mind and the body.”

Medicator – Long Trail Brewing Company

Bridgewater Corners, VT

CBD-Infused American IPA – Once brewed in Vermont, Long Trail Brewing Co.’s, Medicator probably falls under the category of a banned CBD-infused beer. Unfortunately, a few years ago Long Trail pulled the beer from shelves. We’re only adding it here in case it does make a reappearance because we had the chance to sample it and it was a truly fantastic CBD-infused beer!

Considered a hybrid between a pale ale and an IPA, Medicator has what is described by Untappd as a “hemp-forward flavor and aroma.” Truly unique and revolutionary, Medicator should be considered the epitome of CBD-infused beer.

At the moment in the U.S. CBD is barred from being used in alcoholic drinks, so we can only hope that a change in CBD legislature reform will one day revive this CBD-infused beer.

Smokey Hazy Hemp – Humboldt Brewing Company

Photography courtesy of Humboldt Brewing Company

New England / Hazy IPA – In 1987, this coastal California brewery made its mark on the craft beer scene by being one of the original craft breweries and the first to use hemp in commercially available beer. In 1999, Humboldt’s Hemp Ale won a gold medal at the California State Fair Craft Brewing Competition.

Humboldt’s Smokey Hazy Hemp is exactly what it sounds like: a golden smoky hemp hazy IPA. Roasted hemp seeds, beechwood smoked malt, and pearl malt with flaked oats make this a smoky beer to get toasted with. Just kidding, the hemp in this beer won’t do that. Instead, it’ll give the beer a cool, herbal character. As will the Eureka and Simcoe hops with their citrus and pine aroma and flavor.

Sparkling CBD Teas and Juice – Collective Project

Hamilton, ON, Canada

CBD-Infused Sparkling Teas and Juices – Highlighting independent artists and musicians through beers, Collective Arts expanded from craft beer to non-alcoholic CBD-fused sparkling teas and juices. Now under a new brand called Collective Project.

The CBD-infused beverages are described on the website as “well-balanced in both flavour and dose using emulsions that are all natural, gluten-free and produced with non-GMO ingredients.” Sparkling tea flavors include Lemon Pear & Schisandra Green Tea and Raspberry & Hibiscus Rooibos Tea. Each with 20 mg of hemp based CBD.

Similar to the CBD tea, the juices also contain 20 mg of hemp-based CBD. The two CBD juices are Mango, Pineapple & Coconut and Cucumber, Lemon & Lime.

CBD Sparkling Water – Untitled Art

CBD-Infused Sparkling Water – With four varieties of CBD-infused sparkling water, Untitled Art’s beverage line has real organic fruit flavors. For example, blackberry, lemon lime, strawberry, and grapefruit. Plus, each contains 20 mg CBD.

This feel-good sparkling water is free of caffeine, carbohydrates, gluten, and sugar, making it an ideal drink for many.

Additionally, Untitled Art’s fresh take on non-alcoholic beverages also supports a diverse range of artists. Either by working with liquid artists who invent new and exciting drinks, graphic artists who design the labels, or photographers who snap all the photos.

CBD Beer Effects: What Does it Actually Do?

You may have heard of Cannabidiol (CBD) before – but what is it and what does it actually do? Cannabidiol (CBD) is an oil that is rapidly gaining popularity as an addition to alcoholic drinks – including beer.

While it is extracted from the Cannabis sativa plant (marajuana, hemp, etc.) – which can carry negative associations for some – many agree that CBD can be incredibly beneficial, with research suggesting loads of health benefits associated with it.

However, due to the negative association it carries, many have wondered if CBD is safe to consume, if it will get you high or if it will get you more drunk if it is consumed with alcohol.

Today we’re going to answer these burning questions and discuss the effects of CBD beer, what it actually does and what happens when you drink it. And yes – it is perfectly safe!

Why we use CBD in our beer

In short, we use CBD in our beer because it carries bucket-loads of benefits with it, which we’ll take a look at in more detail below. We use the highest quality ingredients in our CBD beer, and the CBD oil we use is no exception: it is comprehensively tested by GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice), Shelf Stability Evaluation and ISO (quality assurance management).

And the beer we infuse the CBD with? Well, it’s fully Safe And Local Supplier (SALSA) certified. We’re all about the quality at Cannabrew.

So, why do we use CBD in our beer?

1. CBD beer helps you unwind, naturally

Research strongly indicates that drinking CBD-infused beer helps people to relax. While some people turn to beer to help them unwind, the benefits of introducing CBD have been reported to reduce feelings of anxiety in drinkers whether at the pub with mates, at a gig, or cosied up at home.

2. CBD beer can help you drift off for a great nights’ sleep

As long as you don’t go overboard on your intake, sinking one or two CBD beers has the potential to help you get a better sleep. It calms your nerves and puts you in a state of greater relaxation – the perfect recipe for some shut-eye.

3. CBD beer can help with pain relief

Yep, it’s not only relaxing, but a natural way to help with some of those pesky day-to-day aches and pains. Beer on its own is never a great cure for a headache – but CBD beer? Well, in our opinion, it might just help you out.

4. Our CBD oil is tailor-made for us

At Cannabrew, we don’t just settle for CBD from any old place – our CBD oil is tailor-made especially for our range of beers and ciders. Why? It allows us to control dissolvability, absorption rate, taste and aroma. Basically, it helps us make a damn fine product that we’re all incredibly proud of.

Effects of CBD infused beer

Alcohol is well-known to reduce our inhibitions and – consumed in safe amounts in controlled environments – can be the recipe for a great time, aid relaxation, combat anxiety and generally be great fun.

Throw CBD into the mix – some of these traits are enhanced. Research indicates that CBD beer drinkers feel more at ease, relaxed and calm. It has the power to give more firepower to the fight against anxiety and may contribute towards getting a better nights’ sleep.

While these effects can indeed alter your mood and behaviour – there’s nothing to worry about at all! After all, it’s kinda the point…

Don’t just take our word for it

Since we launched, we’ve been overwhelmed by the positive responses by our customers who agree that we provide not just a relaxing and calming beer, but a great taste to go along with it:

So good to relax at the weekend! Great taste and leaves you wanting more! – Cameron C.

A new-found favourite! So refreshing with balanced vanilla notes and was very much welcomed after a walk up Helvellyn! Great views and even better beer. 5 stars all round! – Sophie L.

Great tasting craft lager highly recommended after a stressful day to help unwind. – Lewis H.

Common questions about what CBD beer does

We fully understand that some of you folks may still have some burning questions about CBD beer and what it does, so we put together this super handy FAQ just for you. Want to broaden your understanding and open your mind? Let’s get into it:

Does CBD beer get you high?

No – while CBD is extracted from the hemp plant, we put it through several intensive processes to remove all traces of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the psychoactive agent found in abundance in marijuana and cannabis. So no, it will not get you high as it contains 0.0% THC.

Does CBD make you more drunk?

No – in fact, it has been suggested that consuming CBD beer can help alleviate the nasty effects of a hangover by reducing the stress on your liver and the neurodegenerative effects of alcohol. But… this definitely depends on how much you drink – so drink responsibly!

How does CBD beer make you feel?

CBD is added to our products in order to help you unwind, feel calmer and combat feelings of anxiety. In short, to help you feel more comfortable in yourself in any environment, whether you’re in the pub with your mates or putting your feet up at home after a long day.

What Is CBD Infused Beer?

As a CBD connoisseur you are sure to have noticed the growing range of infused foods and beverages, including CBD beer. While you can add your oil tincture to any food or beverage you desire, the oil can change the flavor and consistency. To infuse beer, tequila, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages many use a hemp powder or liquid extract.

Is CBD Legal In Drinks?

Wondering if CBD drinks are legal? This question is tricky, as the answer is both yes and no. Industrial hemp has been legal to farm, harvest, process, sell, and possess since the Farm Bill of 2018. Industrial hemp is a strain of the cannabis plant that is naturally low in the intoxicating compound THC. It is farmed to contain between 0.0% to .3% of THC, which is not enough to get you high.

Those who purchase industrial hemp either consume it orally or apply it topically. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved CBD as a wide spread supplement or food additive. The only exception is 2 prescription pharmaceuticals that contain CBD as one of many ingredients.

So, while you can purchase CBD and even be advised to try CBD by traditional and alternative healthcare practitioners—CBD isn’t on the FDA’s “generally recognized as safe list”. This means that it is illegal to market CBD topicals, oral products, food, and drinks. However, these products can be sold.

This stance is contrary being that CBD is an ingredient in 2 prescription pharmaceutical products, but both products are for rare conditions, including two rare forms of epilepsy. They are often prescribed as a last result after other methods have failed. The FDA’s reasoning is that there is limited scientific data on whether CBD is safe to consume and concerns of long-term side effects. Until CBD is FDA approved, the industry remains unregulated.

So, CBD companies must not make medical claims and cannot engage in traditional paid advertising. For example, CBD brands can have a Facebook page, but they can’t invest in paid social media ads.

Does CBD Beer Get You High?

Nope! With .3% or less THC, there’s no worry of getting high. Infusing your foods and beverages simply provides an alternative way to reach your daily milligrams of CBD. To determine your daily milligrams, start with oral products. Most adults take 10 to 30 milligrams 1 or 2 times per day.

Once you determine your daily milligrams, you can add infused foods and beverages to the mix. You can infuse any food or beverage with CBD oil, but the milligrams per serving will be a bit degraded. Keep in mind that oil does not mix well with water so you will need to whisk, shake, or stir it in. Oil mixes better if there’s a bit of fat in your food or beverage. For example, an infused latte with a shot of Bailey’s Irish Cream. The CBD will blend in better with the milk, instead of sticking more to the sides of the cup.

By purchasing a pre-infused product, you can more accurately calculate the milligrams per serving as powder and extracts distribute evenly in the product.

If marijuana is legal in your state, confirm that you are purchasing a CBD-infused beer and not marijuana-infused beer.

Does CBD Beer Have Alcohol?

It depends on the brand, but many have little to no alcohol at all. However, you can find CBD-infused wines, tequila, and spirits with varying levels of alcohol. Standard alcohol by volume (ABV) is between 3 and 14 percent, but most beers are between 4 and 7 percent. Many bars are adding infused alcohol to their menu, with pre-infused liquor or sparkling water. Or with oil tinctures.

If infused beers don’t contain alcohol, you may be wondering why they’re so popular? Brewing CBD-infused products requires a dealcoholization process similar to what homebrewers use. The flavor is similar to a non-alcoholic beer, and an excellent way to minimize your beer consumption while still enjoying a similar flavor and fizz.

So, while the CBD won’t get you high, it may contain alcohol. So, you must always drink alcoholic beverages responsibly, assign a designated driver, or use an Uber or Lyft to get home. Also, ensure that everyone you are drinking with knows that their beverage is infused with CBD. While legal in all 50 states, CBD is not currently legal at the federal level. Ensure everyone gives their consent as to not put themselves at risk for failing a drug test. While the risk is low, there’s no guarantee that you won’t fail a drug test when using CBD.

Why Infuse Alcohol With CBD?

Most turn to infused beverages as a fun way to mix things up, but there may be some functional benefits. A small study found that the combination of alcohol and CBD significantly lowered blood alcohol levels when compared to drinking alcohol without CBD. Other studies show that CBD may protect against alcohol-induced cell damage.

Can You Make CBD Beer?

Yes! If you brew your own beer, you can purchase CBD powder or nano emulsifications. And yes, you can still make your choice in pale or dark, homebrewed craft beers. The process is a bit different, so perfect a basic recipe and go from there.

What Are The Best CBD Beer Brands?

Many craft brewers are adding CBD to the mix. You may need to order these online, or perform an online search for “CBD beer near me”. Ensure you know the ABV percentage and the milligrams of CBD per beer, which is typically around 5 milligrams.

Here are a few of the best CBD beers:

  • Two Flowers IPA is an infused beer by Coalition Brewing Company in Oregon. It’s described as light, crisp, bitter, and refreshing. It contains 5mg of CBD and 6% ABV.
  • The British brand Green Times Brewing has 3 different infused beers, two with alcohol and one that is non-alcoholic. Each can contains 10mg of CBD.
  • Smoky Hazy Hemp by Humboldt Brewing is an award-winning non-alcoholic beer. This one is made with hemp seeds for flavor, so it doesn’t contain measurable milligrams of CBD. It has a smoky flavor with citrus and pine notes.
